In a major decision, Punjab Cabinet today approved the renaming of Punjab Technical University after the name of former Prime Minister late Sh. Inder Kumar Gujral.
The PTU would now be known as IK Gujral Punjab Technical University.
A spokesman of the government said that the decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in recognition of the enormous contribution made by the former Prime Minister late Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral for the overall improvement & development and prosperity of Punjab.
The cabinet was unanimous in its decision that renaming Punjab Technical University Jalandhar as IK Gujral, Punjab Technical University would be a befitting tribute to the nationally and internationally acclaimed personality.
Reason behind this decision
The actual reason for changing the name of PTU is not confirmed. According to newspapers, books, and other sources, when PTU was established students are getting a good study environment in PTU, then at that time, the inverters of PTU actually declined for investing in university. So at that time, Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral offered for investing and managing the PTU Exam university. So that’s why he renamed the Punjab technical University (PTU) to IKGPT University which means Inder Kumar Gujral Punjab Technical University or I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University
